Oba Akiolu barred from Lagos function

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar 111, has tendered an apology to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, over the “protocol problem” barring him from entering the venue of the opening ceremony of the First Annual Conference of Ahlus Sunnah of Nigeria in Lagos yesterday .
Akiolu in the aftermath of the “protocol problem”, had to return to his palace and refused to attend the conference where the Vice President , Architect Muhammed Sambo was the Special Guest of Honour. Eyewitnesses told Sunday Mirror that the royal father was visibly angered by the situation.
Speaking while delivering his address on the occasion , the sultan said, “First, I will like to offer on behalf of the organisers of this conference, especially the chairman, our apology to the Oba of Lagos, the owner of Lagos, for the little protocol problem he encountered why he was trying to come to this hall even before I came and he had to go back to the palace.
“If I had my way, I would have gone back to the palace to bring him here because he is a very close brother with whom we shared so much together”. “So I believe this conference is to personally meet the Kabiyesi (Oba of Lagos) and explain to him what really happened. But he didn’t take it too much as a bad thing because he is back to the palace,” the Sultan said.
However, speaking further at the event, the Sultan said that the present problem of perceived instability in the country could be laid at the doorsteps of Nigerian politicians, saying the common men who in their millions formed the Republic of Nigeria do not have problem with each other.
The Sultan who was speaking at the event that has as theme, ‘Peace and Unity For Sustainable Development,” added that the main problem of the country are the politicians, stressing, “they are the ones who have been making it look like though in the next one minute, the country will explode”.
“While the common man is in his village herding his cows or his cattle or in his farm or doing a menial job to survive, the politicians who enjoy power will like to do whatever it takes to remain in power “, he said .
He blamed the tension in the country on the utterances of politicians, saying that they are the cause of tension in the country “and the best we can do as religious leaders is to continue calling on these politicians, either when they go to churches or when we as Muslims worship in our various mosques or preach sermons-like what we have in Lagos by this organization-that they should abide in the fear of Almighty Allah” He called on the clerics to come together to serve as guides to “these political leaders” , just as he urged the political leaders to always listen to the sermons preached by these clerics and imbibe the true teaching of Islam and Christianity and govern with the fear of Almighty Allah.
Also speaking on the occasion, a former military Head of State and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari, said Nigerian problem was caused by bad leadership .
According to him, what Nigeria needs now is to be properly secured and properly managed. “It is just a matter of bad leadership”, he said. He said all other problems facing the country come under the two major things- security and proper management. He prayed that the Almighty Allah would provide Nigeria with a leader that can deliver. Speaking also, the Vice-President, Architect Namadi Sambo, has said that no meaningful development can take place in the country without peace and security .
Sambo said: “No matter our best intention, development will continue to elude us if we fail to embrace peace and live in harmony with one another. We must strive to promote love and understanding among the people and to foster the bond of friendship and mutual trust and cooperation,” he said.
He said the present administration accords high premium to religion and that it is committed to intra and inter-faith dialogue and consultations as the only alternative to conflict resolution.
He said the recent anti-gay right bill , the bill against same-sex marriage that was signed by President Goodluck Jonathan into law has further demonstrated that religion has taken its proper place in our country .
“The high moral value of our society is rooted in our deep faith in religion and our rich tradition and cultural values. We have made great inroads in our quest to overcome the security challenges that we are confronted with especially insurgency in the north east” . Sambo said the government was “taking great care in tackling this new form of violence and unprovoked attack on citizens in order to protect the innocent persons from the harm that may come their way “.
Also delivering his lecture, the Osun State Governor , Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who was the Special Guest Lecturer on the occasion harped on the need to curb intolerance of one another that usually leads to extremism, violence and breach of peace .
Aregbesola said Islam is a religion of peace and urged all adherents of the religion to live in peace with people of other religions . He warned that nobody should force his religion on another person.

Moyo and Mofe Oyatogun of star fm losses father...

Many sports lovers would remember Walter Oyatogun for his baritone voice on the Nigerian Television Authority back in the late 70s and early 80s. He might not have been some viewers’ favourite presenter then but no one will disagree with the fact that he delivered sports stories with interesting analyses, displaying acute knowledge in various sports disciplines.
He was in a class of his own during his time on air, and not a few journalists and sports administrators gained from his wealth of experience and sagacity. Such was his influence and fame in sports journalism.

Oyatogun is a lover of many sports. He was even an amateur boxer in his early years in Ghana, representing Nigeria at regional championships in the late 60s.
The Oyo State-born septuagenarian is often described as stubborn, based on his stance on issues relating to sports development. But he explains his arguments were borne out of his beliefs that things would work out if principles were followed.
“I’m not a stubborn man; I just believe in principles. I live my life in a manner that will not violate another man’s freedom,” the former pugilist said.
Oyatogun joined NTA in the late 70s as a reporter but he insisted his love for journalism dated back to the 50s.

He said, “I started journalism a very long time ago even before I went into boxing. It was when I joined the NTA as a reporter that I delved into sports reporting.
“Before joining the NTA, I was with the Lagos State Sports Council where I helped in bringing about a number of interests for the organisation.”

Oyatogun went into film production after leaving the NTA but his programme went off the air when funds were not forthcoming from sponsors.
If Oyatogun’s fans had thought his fame and vast knowledge in sports would bring him fortune, they were dead wrong. The ace broadcaster lives in penury and is suffering from atherosclerosis, a disease related to the thickening of the artery walls and which doctors say could have led to the partial stroke he suffered on July 27 2012. He later suffered two others strokes which left him more incapacitated. He died last weekend in a Lagos hospital after suffering a stroke.

However a tribute was made for him this morning by the duo; Moyo and Mofe on their morning regular morning show. The show will be brought to a halt for this week in honour of their departed darling father.
May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

This is a wake up call to our government. We celebrate veterans after their exit more than we do when they are alive.

The Top 7 Technology Trends That Will Dominate 2014

google glassStrap yourself in, it’s going to be a wild ride. In considering the changes we’ve seen in technology over the past year, I’m bracing myself for unprecedented growth when it comes to anytime, anywhere, on-demand information and entertainment.
Based on the trends we’ve seen so far in 2013, I predict 2014 will see many fledgling technologies mature and grow beyond what we could have imagined just a few years ago.
So without further ado, here are my top 7 predictions for technology trends that will dominate 2014.
1. Consumers will come to expect Smart TV capabilities
With Smart TV shipments expected to reach 123 million in 2014 – up from about 84 million in 2012 – we are poised to see explosive growth in this industry.
In the midst of this growth, we will continue to see fierce competition between major players like Samsung, Panasonic, and LG. Prices will need to continue to drop, as more consumers crave, and even expect, the ability to use Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video and their web browser via their TV.
Of course, the development we’re all waiting for in 2014 is the release of Apple’s much anticipated iTV. It appears the iTV is now in the early development stage, and that Apple may be in the process of making a deal with Time Warner to facilitate programming on Apple devices.
The device is rumoured to include iCloud sync, the ability to control your iPhone, and ultra HD LCD panels. Keep an eye out for this release as early as summer 2014.
2. Smart watches will become ‘smarter’

Rather than having to pull out your smartphone or tablet for frequent email, text and social media updates, you’ll glance at your watch.
2014 is the year to keep an eye out for the Google watch. Rumor has it the device will integrate with Google Now, which aims to seamlessly provide relevant information when and where you want it (and before you’d asked for it).
We’ll see smart watches become even smarter, learning what news and updates are important to us, when we want to receive them, and responding more accurately to voice controls.
For smart watches to succeed, they’ll need to offer us something that our smart phone can’t; whether this means more intuitive notifications, or the ability to learn from our daily activities and behaviours (for instance, heart rate monitoring), it will be interesting to see.
3. Google Glass will still be in “wait and see” mode
While Google Glass hasn’t yet been released to the general public, we’ve heard enough about it to know it’s still very early days for this technology. With an estimated 60,000 units expected to sell in 2013, and a predicted several million in 2014, it’s still a long way from becoming a common household technology.
These augmented reality glasses allow you to access information like email and texts, take hands-free pictures and videos, effortlessly translate your voice, and even receive overlaid walking, cycling or driving directions, right within your field of vision.
It’s predicted that both Google Glass 2.0, and its companion, the Glass App Store, should be released to the general public sometime in 2014.

Be on the lookout for competition in this market, particularly from major players like Samsung. I predict we’ll see much of this competition aimed at niche markets like sports and healthcare.
4. Other applications and uses for Apple’s TouchID will emerge
The release of the iPhone 5S has, for the first time, made on-the-go fingerprint security a reality. The potential for Touch ID technology to really take off is, I believe, an inevitable reality. Touch ID, which uses a high-resolution camera to scan your fingerprint, allows convenient ultra-security for your iPhone.
Currently, the technology is limited; the only real uses are unlocking your iPhone, and making purchases in the App store. I predict that we’ll see this technology incorporated into other Apple products soon. I think we’ll even see TouchId integrated into MacBook products later this year or next.
I also predict TouchID, though not quite bug-free, will be used for other purposes, such as to securely integrate with home security systems, access password software, and even pay for groceries (more on that in an upcoming article).

5. Xbox One and PS4 will blur the lines between entertainment and video gaming
The new gaming consoles (Xbox One and PS4) will increasingly integrate social media-like connectivity between players. Players could have followers, work together to achieve in-game goals, and new technology will allow for equally-skilled players to compete.
The PS4, slated to be released November 15th, will track both the controller and the player’s face and movements for more intuitive play.
Apart from great gaming, these systems will allow for a far more integrative entertainment experience. For instance, rather than switching between TV, gaming, music and sports, you’ll be able to do two or even three activities side-by-side, or by easily switching back and forth.

6. 3D Printing will begin to revolutionize production
We’ve seen a huge rise in the popularity of 3D printing this year, coupled with a dramatic fall in pricing. The ability to easily create multi-layered products that are actually usable – well, that’s pretty amazing.
I’ll be watching for a movement towards simple products being produced close to home, and to greater customization given the ease of manufacturing. I think it’s inevitable that manufacturing in countries such as China will become less appealing and lucrative for businesses given the high costs of shipping and managing overseas contracts.
I don’t expect these changes to reach their full effect in 2014, however I believe businesses will be starting to consider how this will affect their production plans for 2015 and beyond.

7. The movement towards natural language search will make search more accurate and intuitive
There was a time when we used terms like “personal digital assistant” to describe a hand-held calendar. Oh, how times have changed.
With the emergence of intelligent personal assistants like Google Now and Apple’s Siri, the goal is to have information intuitively delivered to you, often before you even ask for it. The shift seems to be away from having to actively request data, and instead to have it passively delivered to your device.
Natural language search will continue to overtake keyword-based search, as seen by Google’s move towards longer, more natural searches in its recent release of Hummingbird, Google’s largest algorithm update thus far.
